Cemetery Gates : Green-Wood Brooklyn

I had been just once before in the winter as a WONDERFUL and thoughtful birthday gift from my friends Micol and Barrett on a tour of horrible deaths...i was so intrigued and overwhelmed then...it was just so...VAST...so sprawling a beautiful in the new fallen snow...i KNEW i had to come back......i just had to....

So this past Saturday i decided to take a stroll...alone...and spend some time  in the lush green quiet of one of the most stunning cemeteries in the area.... I took a 3 hour walk and was exhausted and a bit sunburnt but it was wholly worth it!!!

Founded in 1838 Green-wood soon became a destination place...not just for your final rest but for carriage rides and picnics...Green-wood even helped inspire other parks in other boroughs including Central Park.....spanning 478 acres and filled with ponds and paths...monuments and sculptures and some of the most extravagant year round blooming trees and foliage...Greenwood is a haven of peaceful solitude in a bustling city.....a lush green necropolis filled with so much beauty and reverence....

So take a walk with me and enjoy the obvious and sometimes hidden beauty in this gorgeous landscape of tombstones and crypts.....

XOXO

the sunlight was so visceral and sharp...like shiny broken shards of glass shooting through branches with abandon

the stained glass glowed brightly even in the dank darkness of the tombs....

time and its fleetingness was always apparent

these were the catacombs we visited on our last trip....and even bathed in sunlight still feel chilly and sinister....

birds were everywhere that day...apperently the cemetery also attracts many birds watchers...

what a serendipitous moment!!!! always good to be ready for a photo!!

this dapper little chap was one of my faves.....

love the odd juxtaposition of egyptian gods and temples with Christian mythologies....MAy Joseph baby Jesus and the Sphinx all guarding a pyramid....

the Two Necropolis' {Necropoli?}

on the last visit my friend Micol pointed out that across the street is the last Victorian Greenhouses in the area and is in the middle of being restored to its former glory!!!! It was purchased by Green-Wood and will hopefully one day be restored and able to visit!!!

XOXO
